Nogales Affiliate
Nogales Affiliate began operations in the community of Ignacio Zaragoza in 1993. Since then, it has been consistently supported by volunteers from La Plata, Colorado Affiliate. These volunteer groups have worked at Imuris, Mascareñas, Nogales(in all the town districts and communities), Puerto Peñasco, Santa Cruz and Miguel Hidalgo. Their support includes construction work, donations in kind, financing, tools, health centers and soup kitchens, among other assistance.
In Nogales, HPHM has assisted families in great need for a shelter. Mostly, people who don’t have the possibility to buy, complete building, improve or repair their homes. Currently, the organization is promoted in the North part of the state through newspapers, TV, radio stations, volunteers and beneficiaries.
The inhabitants of Nogales account for 7.20 % of the state’s population, being the third community in population, with a population density of 96.56 inhabitants per square kilometer.
There is a high level of immigration in the region, mostly from the south of the state and the state of Sinaloa. There are also groups from Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, and the State of Mexico. Housing problems faced by borderline towns include lack of enough land for construction, where great extensions of land are in the hands of just a few owners, high demand and expensive offer (high price per square meter), families who do not qualify for official programs (INFONAVIT, ISSSTESON, ISSSTE, IMSS) and houses lacking of basic utilities.
